NGC2174, the Monkey Head nebula, is a cloud of gas and dust that surrounds the star cluster NGC2175. The nebula is mostly composed of hydrogen gas, which is ionized by the ultraviolet radiation emitted by the cluster's hot stars. That makes the nebula glow in a typical red light of ionized hydrogen. NGC2174 is some 6400 ly distant. |
