M78 is a bright diffuse reflection nebula, part of the Orion Molecular Cloud Complex. It is a cloud of interstellar dust that shines with the reflected light of adjacent stars. Characteristic blue colour of the nebula is due to scattering effect. Part of the same complex are NGC 2064, NGC 2067 and NGC 2071. This nebulae are about 1600 ly away from the Earth. M78 has some 5 ly acros. |
