M64 is notable for striking band of dark dust that partially obscures its bright core. Its internal motion is also unusual. The gas in the outer regions of M64 is rotating in the opposite direction from the gas and stars in its inner regions. This is most likely result of a merger between M64 and a satellite galaxy over a billion years ago. M64 is about 17 million ly distant and it has the diameter of some 54 kly. |
