M31 is the nearest major galaxy to our own Milky Way galaxy and the largest member of our Local Group of galaxies. It consists of hundreds of billions of stars whose combined light we see as Andromeda Galaxy. M31 is interacting with its companion M32 resulting in disturbance of its spiral structure. The Hubble Space Telescope has revealed that the Andromeda Galaxy M31 has a double nucleus, perhaps remnant of smaller galaxy absorbed by M31. M31 is 250 kly across and its distance is 2900 kly. Dwarf elliptical galaxies M32 and M110 are the brightest ones of 11 known companions of M31. |
