Equipment: QSI583wsg with internal filter wheel and Astrodon E series Gen II LRGB filter set through APM 107/700 APO telescope with Astro-Tech 2" field flattener on Losmandy GM8 mount. Imaged through IDAS LPS filter.

Comment: Difficult target for me, it is always very low on the horizon (bellow 25 degrees).

Helix Nebula is a planetary nebula. Planetary nebulae are formed near the end of red giant stars life, when they eject their outer layers because of very strong stellar wind. Glowing shells of ejected gas are ionized by strong ultraviolet radiation of the remaining central star core. Planetary nebulae are formations that last don't last very long, only several tens of thousands of years. Helix nebula is estimated to be some 11 thousand years old. NGC7293, 700 ly distant, is the closest to us bright planetary nebula. It has diameter of 2,5 ly.
